Going into the retreat I was a little unsure on how open everyone was going to open up to each other; however, after I arrived at the airport and linked up with a few others attending the retreat I knew it was going to be okay. I think for me just being around everyone and hearing their stories helped me realized what I need to work on in my personal life and also how lucky and thankful I am to be where I am in my life today.
Going into the trip I never rock climbed before in my life. I always considered it a sport that was out of my league and not worth trying. After the first day I realized this was something that I have been missing out on. Being up there on the rock all by yourself really puts your entire life in perspective, you can either quit and head back down or quit bitching and get up the god dam rock.
I absolutely 100% gained a ton from the retreat. For me the most beneficial and enjoyable moments have to be at night gathered around drinking a few beers getting to know everyone. I also really enjoyed having the active duty guys there, just being around them made me feel more connected to the Marine Corps then I have in a long time. I do feel that other Veterans will benefit from retreats like the Rock Climbing retreat. I don’t know when the next retreat will be but I do have someone who I believe can benefit from some time will fellow veterans.
