It’s funny how you can meet a complete stranger, but they have lived a very similar life. We joined Marines, pushed ourselves to get into certain units, deployed in combat, then transitioned out. We were all different people and personalities, but our paths in life ran parallel to each other. It was like meeting long lost brothers again.That was one of the most enriching benefits of being able to be on this retreat.

The Raider Program has a great staff, and a great leader. Nick took the time to listen to everybody there, while encouraging us all to seek help from him and our brothers in battle, as well as another great organization: The Gallant Few. Rock climbing is a perfect metaphor for what this program does, as it teaches us that the rock face in front of us can feel overwhelming and intimidating, but with the help of those around you, your grit, and the decision to take it one move at a time, you will make it to the top, and be that much stronger in the end.

Going into the trip I never rock climbed before in my life. I always considered it a sport that was out of my league and not worth trying. After the first day I realized this was something that I have been missing out on. Being up there on the rock all by yourself really puts your entire life in perspective, you can either quit and head back down or quit bitching and get up the god dam rock.

The Raider Project is offering a weekend outdoor rock climbing trip to veterans that are working through the rigors associated with transition out of the service. Previous trips have included top rope climbing of beautiful Windgate Sandstone face and crack climbs. We'll be teaching the basics of rope work, climbing techniques, and belaying. There will be camping, hiking, climbing, and rappelling.
